Hanna Instruments was the first instrumentation manufacturer to offer a 4-ring potentiometric probe with a conductivity meter. The potentiometric method of measuring electrical conductivity in liquids is by far the most accurate method available today. The four rings are aligned concentrically on the probe shaft. The two outer rings apply a voltage which creates a buffer field around the two inner rings. The inner rings pick up a current and measure the conductivity of the liquid inside the buffer field. This completely eliminates the polarization which occurs in the 2-ring amperometric method. Without polarization, the probe can also measure a larger range of conductivity because it does not suffer from electrolysis. This 4-ring method is used in all of the following probes.
